Lorenzo Ruiz essays Lorenzo Ruiz was born in Binondo, Manila between the years of 1600 and 1610. His father was Chinese and his mother was a Filipino, just like him. His parents were Christian and he was baptized with the name of Lorenzo after a Martyr during the third century. His last name Ruiz was taken from the last name of his godfather. In his younger years, Lorenzo served at the convent of Biondo. He learned Spanish and Catechism from the Dominican priests. After several years he earned the title of notary. He became a member of the Confraternity which is an organization devoted to the Blessed Virgin. He soon married and had two boys and a girl. Lorenzo then went on a ship to Japan to escape the chance of being caught by authorities that thought he committed a crime. At this time there was a large amount of persecution against Christians. People who believed in Jesus were jailed or put to death. Thousands of people chose death over denying the belief in Christianity and of those people was Lorenzo. Lorenzo went through a lot of pain for not denying his love of God. He said, I am a Christian and I will remain a Christian to the point of death. He was told that if he didnt renounce his faith for God that he would be put to death. Lorenzo chose his love for God and death over being set free and renouncing his faith in God. On September 23, 1637 he died in the hanging pit, which was a form of persecution. He was blessed on February 1981, at Luneta. He was declared a saint on October 18, 1987 in Rome. Two Party System - Why Democrats and Republicans Win The two party system is firmly rooted in American politics and has been since the first organized political movements  emerged in the late 1700s. The two party system in the United States is now dominated by the Republicans and the Democrats. But through history the  Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans, then the Democrats and the Whigs, have represented opposing political ideologies and campaigned against each other for seats at the local, state and federal levels. No third-party candidate has ever been elected to the White House, and very few have won seats in either the House of Representatives or the U.S. Senate. The most notable modern exception to the two party system is U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a socialist whose campaign for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination invigorated liberal members of the party. The closest any independent presidential candidate has come to being elected to the White House was  billionaire Texan Ross Perot, who won 19 percent of the popular vote in the 1992 election. So why is the two party system unbreakable in the United States? Why do Republicans and Democrats hold a lock on elected offices at all levels of government? Is there any hope for a third party to emerge or independent candidates to gain traction despite election laws that make it difficult for them to get on the ballot, organize and raise money?   Here are four  reasons the two party system is here to stay for a long, long time. 1. Most Americans Are Affiliated With a Major Party Yes, this is the most obvious explanation for why the two party system remains solidly intact: Voters want it that way. A majority of Americans is registered with  the Republican and the Democratic parties, and thats been true throughout modern history, according to public-opinion surveys conducted by the Gallup organization. It is true that the portion of voters who now consider themselves independent of either major party is larger than either the Republican and Democratic blocs alone. But those independent voters are disorganized and rarely reach a consensus on the many third-party candidates; instead, most independents tend to lean toward one of the major parties come election time, leaving only a small portion of truly independent, third-party voters. 2. Our Election System Favors a Two Party System The American system of electing representatives at all levels of government makes it almost impossible for a third party to take root. We have what are known as single-member districts in which there is only one victor. The winner of the popular vote in all 435 congressional districts, U.S. Senate races and state legislative contests  takes office, and the electoral losers get nothing. This winner-take-all method fosters a two-party system and differs dramatically from proportional representation elections in European democracies.   Duverger’s Law, named for the French sociologist Maurice Duverger, states that a majority vote on one ballot is conducive to a two-party system ...  Elections determined by a majority vote on one ballot literally pulverize third parties (and would do worse to fourth or fifth parties, if there were any; but none exist for this very reason). Even when a single ballot system operates with only two parties, the one that wins is favored, and the other suffers. In other words, voters tend to choose candidates who actually have a shot at winning instead of throwing their votes away on someone who will only get a small portion of the popular vote. By contrast, proportional representation elections held elsewhere in the world allow for more than one candidate to be chosen from each district, or for the selection of at-large candidates. For example, if the Republican candidates win 35 percent of the vote, they would control 35 percent of the seats in the delegation; if Democrats won 40 percent, they would represent 40 percent of the delegation; and if a third party such as the Libertarians or Greens won 10 percent of the vote, they would get to hold one in 10 seats. The basic principles underlying proportional representation elections are that all voters deserve representation and that all political groups in society deserve to be represented in our legislatures in proportion to their strength in the electorate. In other words, everyone should have the right to fair representation, the advocacy group FairVote states. 3. Its Tough for Third Parties to Get on the Ballot Third-party candidates have to clear greater hurdles to get on the ballot in many states, and its difficult to raise money and organize a campaign when youre busy gathering tens of thousands of signatures. Many states have closed primaries instead of open primaries, meaning only registered Republicans and Democrats can nominate candidates for the general election. That leaves third-party candidates at a significant disadvantage. Third party candidates have less time to file paperwork and must collect a greater number of signatures than do major party candidates in some states. 4. There Are Just Too Many Third Party Candidates There are third parties out there. And fourth parties. And fifth parties. There are, in fact, hundreds of small, obscure political parties and candidates who appear on ballots across the union in their names. But they represent a broad spectrum of political beliefs outside of the mainstream, and placing them all in a big tent would be impossible. In the 2016 presidential election alone, voters had dozens of third-party candidates to choose from if they were dissatisfied with Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton. They could have voted instead for libertarian Gary Johnson; Jill Stein of the Green Party;  Darrell Castle of the Constitution Party; or Better for Americas Evan McMullin. There were socialist candidates, pro-marijuana candidates, prohibition candidates, reform candidates. The list goes on. But these obscure candidates suffer from a lack of  consensus, no common ideological  thread running through all of them. Simply put, theyre too splintered and disorganized to be credible alternatives to the major-party candidates.

Its initial use was welcomed by the general public, as it was hoped to lower the price of electricity, and utilise nuclear power for it's potential as a resource, not a weapon. However, as people became aware of the long term dangers involved in storing nuclear waste, it's use was criticised. Two accidents, at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, demonstrated to the world the enormous risks involved in producing nuclear power.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Nuclear power provides 17% of the world's electricity but coal is the main source, making up 39%. However, fossil fuels such as coal, require greater quantities to produce the equivalent amount of electricity produced from Uranium. The use of nuclear power opposed to burning fossil fuels has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 2 billion tonnes per year, minimising the global warming effect on the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is responsible for half of man made gases contributing to the Greenhouse Effect, and has sparked action from the UN Intergovernment Panel on Climate Change. Their consensus is a concern for the environment in the next century if fossil fuels continue to be used, even at present global levels. English Renaissance

The English renaissance was very delayed from the European movement in Florence during the 1400’s but there was many great works and essays when the movement finally did come about. Renaissance with the French meaning rebirth was used to describe the change in ways of the past or â€Å"rebirth†. The renaissance was greatly represented and made understandable by the works of English literature of that time. During the English renaissance there were literary works of playwrights, philosophers, and poets that all represented the movement.The English Renaissance was started around 1485 near 100 years after it had started in Europe, and the real start of the rebirth is said to be Battle of Bosworth Field which formally started the Tudor Dynasty and end of the â€Å"War of the Roses†. Most works did not come about in England till the 1600’s at the height of the English renaissance. There was a large difference between the English renaissance and that of the move ment in Italy; the English renaissance is more of works of music and literature while in Italy the focus was on visual arts.Philosopher Francis Bacon and Queen Elizabeth herself both wrote of problems with way things are done. Both wrote of their own views on the way that people are, Francis Bacon wrote to warn of the ways and Elizabeth wrote to try to represent the ways of man. The literary works of writers, poets, and playwrights represented the English Resistance and the views of the time. Francis Bacon was a famous philosopher during the English Renaissance, he wrote religious/literary, scientific, and juridical works.Much of his work greatly represented the renaissance, some of his scientific writings lead to the creation of the Baconian Method or what is now known as the scientific method. Bacon wrote about man, and improving the learning habits, because at the time English improvement of learning was at a standstill. Francis Bacon was known as a man of science, his studies on man led to the essays that described many different aspects of life and how people typically handle them. His work â€Å"of Studies† represented the Renaissance humanism, the improvement of man to his full potential.This piece is a work to describe the benefits of reading, at the time most of the lower class were illiterate. The line â€Å"Crafty men contemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them; for they teach not their own use; but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation. † Helps build the idea that studies improve one, because the simple man is the one left at awe while the others get ahead because they have read and learned. Bacon used this piece of work in showing that if lacking in areas of intelligence reading can help cure it.This work represents the Renaissance because of its main point that reading is important, that mainly being because a large group mainly lower class were illiterate, and the learning methods in E ngland at the time where totally at a standstill. Bacon had works of improving the Learning process and â€Å"of Studies† is part of the idea â€Å"So every defect of the mind may have a special receipt†, Meaning that studies can cure any problem of the mind. During the highest point of the English renaissance is William Shakespeare, who greatly represents the ideals of Renaissance humanism in his plays and sonnets.William Shakespeare is a famous playwright/poet from the 1600’s. He is most famous for his sonnets and in particular sonnet 130 represents the major works of literature during this time period. Shakespeare not only had sonnets to represent the renaissance but all the play Hamlet shows that people with higher intellectual capabilities were witty and self-knowledge. The play hamlet expressed the ideals of Humanism in Hamlet himself, a prince who used wit and self–expression to solve the problem.Hamlet easily uses his knowledge to discover that hi s uncle murdered his father. He uses the same principles that support Francis Bacon’s idea that a learned man is a wise and witty man. Acting on his feet he devised a plot to discover the truth of his father murder, scripting a play of the murder to watch the reaction of his uncle. Many of Shakespeare works represented the change of England at the time. Shakespeare’s sonnet 130 is about his mistress. It mocks the works of Petrarch and other Renaissance writers on describe the beauties and perfections of lovers.The renaissance was plentiful of works describing love, but sonnet 130 approaches the typical love poem at a different point of view. Shakespeare describes the flaws of his lover â€Å"And in some perfumes is there more delight, than in the breath that from my mistress reeks† this unflattering remark along with many others act to not only mock the other writing style but to show the imperfections towards his love. In the last couplet of the poem Shakespear e brings in the aspect of love, matching the poems and other love literature of the renaissance. And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare,  as any she belied with false compare† this final couplet infers that he won’t lie and tell his mistress she is perfect and â€Å"walks on water† , he will tell her the truth and love her either anyways. Towards the end of the renaissance in the 1660 Owen Feltham wrote the great English essay â€Å"Of Dreams†, writing about the significance of dreams. Dreams could be used to tell a man’s true intentions, unaltered by the real world. Feltham talks about how the wise Zeno said â€Å"He could collect a man by his dreams.For then the soul, stated in a deep response, bewrayed her true affections†, saying dreams are also much more. Sleeping helps the growth of wisdom from self-understanding, but not all dreams are ones that should be followed. He talks of a man who dreams of a way to fix his spleen pain by opening two veins between his fingers, this is not a dream you would want to wake up and test. He states that some dreams could be considered wise and some to be far out to pursue without practice or planning. Dreams may be, to a wise observer, be of special benefit†, so he is saying listen to your dreams, if your dreams are representing you and if anything from Hamlet is true about self-knowledge leading to wit and wisdom, than listening to your dreams should make you wise. Your dreams are unfiltered versions of your ambitions, and the renaissance was a time of rediscovery. Going from the illiteracy to poems and plays and speeches about self-discovery and love, â€Å"of love† is a work that is on the edge of improving knowledge. You won’t learn a book or learn math by sleeping, but your mind might come up with ideas that cannot be taught.There is a genius of the sleeping mind; it is not altered by reality, with that it might be able to come up with a solution to an unsolved problem. The renaissance in England is argued to not be named that in itself because it was not a social rebirth of roman literature and art; it was a rebirth of ideas. The mindset that was in most works of literature of importance brought up ideas of self-knowledge, and wisdom, this was known as renaissance humanism. I feel most connections can be made through works of literature at this time by that idea, that man should improve themselves.All the works of the time are pieces of art in themselves, the way that Shakespeare organizes a typical love poem to mock other writers and come up with a creative way to state his love. Renaissance humanism can be found in the deeper thoughts of Owen Feltham, leading to his writing on self-discovery by dreams. These works not only represent the ideas of the renaissance they are what make up the renaissance, they are the â€Å"beautiful art† , England’s renaissance was not one of visual arts it was on literature and th eater.

Evaluating the Arts Essay

The two pieces of art I have chosen to write about are both performance art pieces by Trisha Brown. Brown is a postmodern performance artist whose work is shown throughout the United States, although mostly in small, liberal arts colleges, such as Mills College in California. All of her works are considered to be extremely experimental, as well as extremely contemporary and postmodern. The first work is Man Walking Down the Side of a Building. However, the actual still shot is called Walking on the Wall, and for our purposes, this is what will be studied. The still frame involves five bodies, all literally suspended, walking on a wall. The five dancers are in no particular order. They are simply walking, in order, at any pace, down the wall. This 1971 piece was designed to be performed at a specific site, with the dancers suspended in harnesses, moving along the wall. The wonder of this piece of art is that there is absolutely no metaphorical meaning. Now, that is not to say that there is no deeper meaning. There certainly is. But the piece is viewed by artists as completely unconventional, because this piece was originally a dance of sorts. However, there are no standard five positions of the feet, as seen in conventional, classical ballet. There was no music, no stage set, nothing. It was simply movement, and gravity. Brown was trying to have the audience understand that art does not need to have some sort of deeper meaning in order to be valuable; that’s already been done. The most intriguing part about this piece of art is the colors that were used. As it is all in black, whites, and grays, those shades become the center of the piece, as well as the shadows. Because the shadows point in different directions, it is difficult for the eye to simply focus on one section. In addition, this piece was made in the late 1970’s. Of course, it was extremely controversial, as the form of dance that was en vogue at the time were Balanchine’s classical ballerinas, who of course performed classical and neoclassical works. This was meant to be a rebellion of that form of work. The second piece of artwork I have chosen is a still of Brown’s Roof Piece (1973. ) Much like Walking on the Wall, this piece was created as a postmodern response to art. In Roof Piece, the dancers were on twelve different rooftops over a ten-block area throughout New York City. Each dancer would transmit movements to a dancer on the nearest roof. Therefore, this was actually an improvisational piece. In addition, Brown’s artistic intent was to create a piece of art that had no metaphorical or symbolic meaning. In the still frame of this piece, it is easy to see the fluid, yet also geometric design of the dancers. Of course, this still frame is also in black and white. However, what is particularly interesting about this piece is the way in which the background of New York City is blurry, while the dancer is in perfect focus. The artist obviously intended for the dancer to be the only one in the spotlight. With the busy connotations of the City, it is quite refreshing to see the dancer juxtaposed against the city.
